How do I become an intellectual?
Is it too late to become an intellectual at the age of 33? I avoid people and relationships because I don’t know anything. I don’t have my own opinion and I usually repeat the opinion of others. I have never felt intelligent. Everytime I try to read about something other than the gossip and horoscope, I get a headache and I get bored or feel very sleepy. Nothing interests me really. People much younger than me are more knowledgeable. How can I catch up with everyone? They seem so comfortable with talking and meeting new people and they are so eloquent.

Just by stating your question you have started on the road to being an intellectual.

You must educate yourself. Reading is a great way to do so. If you are bored, try a different subject. Forget everyone else, read what you find interesting. Never mind if you look stupid asking questions, that is how you will learn.

actually, you’ve started it already! good job on having the initiative on improving yourself. knowing some current events may help–read the newspaper or watch some news. try talking to people, maybe starting with people you know. you can learn a lot of things from conversing. =]

I am not sure if you can change something like that, but I have a son who is very much like that, he is 33 and hates to leave the house, though he does love being outdoors, more than indoors, but the whole social thing is a quagmire for us. but if you want to be more “intellectual” and get too bored reading that type of thing, you could try learning on the computer, or by watching educational tv, jeopardy, do puzzles, like variety crossword type puzzle books have a large variety of puzzles available to do, which stimulates your brain and educates you at the same time. but your true value doesn’t mean your only importance is in intellectualism. we are all important and needed wither we are intellectual or not, we all have something to contribute to this world! you are valuable, wither you are socially adept, or not, you are valuable wither you are intellectual or not!

Do things like horoscopes sometimes freak you out?
For three days in a row, my horoscope came true. I became a believer from it! haha 🙂
also, i did that random name generator for who my next date would be, and it turned out to be a guy i was planning on going on a date with this upcoming weekend. Freaky right?

if i ever read it and it just happens to come true, then maybe but I highly doubt it

Before I was into astrology I would sometimes read the newspaper horoscopes at the end of the day to see if they were true. I think every day for like a week or something it was so accurate. I got paranoid and ripped out the Sagittarius section so nobody else could read it. Yes, it freaked me out.

they never really work for me, but when they do, its because the horoscope is really general so anything could be considered to have come true

I agree with the others, that you have already started.
One of the best ways is to think of you what you want to know about. There are really only a few that know everything about everything, and that is hard to compete with. But to know more, instead of staying out of those conversations, be a part of them. You’ll be surprised at how much you learn by just listening in on those conversations.
Pick something that you want to know about – what do you like to do? what are you passionate about? Once you know that, reading on that or furthering your knowledge in that subject won’t seem dull because you enjoy it. For example: I don’t know much about anything, but when it comes to motorcycles, music or Christianity, I can hold a great “intellectual” conversation – only because I enjoy learning and finding out more about them.
It is definitely not too late!
If you are interested in horoscopes, maybe you might like to become an astrology expert. People love getting readings done at parties. Or maybe you could learn about other ways of classifying personality types and become a whiz at navigating social scenarios, because you know what personality types you are interacting with. Especially with your interest in gossip, it seems you are a social creature. You can develop, refine, and hone your social skills and become the life of the party. Not necessarily an “intellectual” but still very interesting! I am an intellectual, actually, but I adore spending time with people who are socially very lively because it pulls me out of my own head and lightens up the “atmosphere” of a party or gathering.
