Should Christians study the stars?

Should Christians study the stars?
I would like to get your feedback of Gen 1:14 – ..let them be for signs. And also knowing David was a star gazer and Solomon knew there was a time for everything under the sun. The planets and stars (sun)relates to time. Also Daniel being the chief over the astrologers. My point is, why can’t christian obtain the wisdom of the timing like solomon but not use it for evil or to plan your daily lives. I am a strong believer of Rom 8:28, we need to go through trials and not avoid our dissapointments with the use of an astrologer. We should use the signs of the stars to see whats coming whereby being better prepared to seek God’s help to see us through. I believe the pagans learned astrology from fallen angels, and I also believe the good angels have the same knowledge and more but this knowledge was left out of the Bible from the pope at the time who obviously was in charge of the King James Authority. All knowledge is like a two edged sword, its what we use it for, we’ll be judged by. So let’s just do good with ALL knowledge we can acquire
We would all acknowledge that the moon has tremendous influence with our lives- A time to plant, harvest for best results etc to avoid pest & rot. Also when to have surgery to avoid excess bleeding. Most women mensturation and child delivery(and menopause) varies with the moon based on they time of birth. So thats just the moon what about the influences of other planets. Scripture tells us in Job 38: 12-13 NEV ..and shake the dog star from its place – this refers to the star the Egyptians observed to know when the Nile would flood. Job 38: 31-33 …Knowest the ordinances of heaven.. Judges 5:20 God sets the times; astrologers and prophets read the clock, call the hour, and sound the alarm

Beliefs in astrology and supernatural beings are related. I personally think they’re equally implausible.

Examples of biblical references to astrology seem to be:

Genesis 1:14 says “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: “.

And in Job 38:31 it says “Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion “.

Matthew 2:1-2 says “there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.”

However, Astrology was the forerunner of the modern science of Astronomy. Superstition often survives, despite increases in knowledge.

Yes. How can such a complex and well-designed universe have been created by some magic giant in the sky instead of being formed within the logical laws of physics?

Answer by arkent
Don’t confuse astronomy with astrology.

Studying the stars in the universe that the Grand Creator made is fine.

Trying to assign meaning to the lining up of stars and using that information to try to make predictions is wrong – that is spiritism and is denounced in the bible.

Answer by lazyslacker013
Well, I agree christians should look to the stars but not to predict daily life. It is useful for judging the tides but otherwise astronomy should trump astrology. Got to look out for those meteors that could crash into earth. There is also the eventual need for space colonization as predicted that the meek shall inherit the earth (jk I know that’s out of context) so the fit, intelligent ones will leave for greener pastures at some point, hopefully taking the word with them evangelically.

Consider that there is no prohibition for seers and soothsayers unless they are trying to lead you away from God.

Answer by Andie
Studying the stars is fascinating, and if you are interested in how it possibly relates to the Bible and Biblical prophecy, you should check out the book Witness of the Stars by E.W. Bullinger. Be careful, however, either when learning on your own or reading books on the topic, that you understand where truth and knowledge really come from. God has given us the Bible as our authority. People didn’t always have the Bible – and I think that is quite possibly a reason why God gave men the stars for signs. But we have the Bible now, and that is where we find our truth – not in astrology or by trying to find an interpretation for the stars.

The Bible, starting with Genesis 1, describes stars as lanterns, hanging on a solid dome of the sky.

If a Christian has curiousity about astronomy or cosmology, then they should study the stars. If they have an interest in fantasy, then let them make up astrology BS or whatever, play with tea offal.

“I believe the pagans learned astrology from fallen angels”
uh… you are aware that fallen angels aren’t part of anyone’s religion, but yours, right? Why does it not occur to you that they just made it all up? That it has no merit?

Yes. If they did they would fine that their religion is based on the stars. christianity is nothing but sun worship anthropomorphised.

    1) Should Christians study the stars?

Many of the most well-known and groundbreaking astronomers in history have been Christians. I can’t imagine why Christians should not study the stars.

    2) And also knowing David was a star gazer

    ?

    3) The planets and stars (sun)relates to time.

Well…time can be measured by the unaided or aided eye using the apparent motion of celestial objects – but that is really their only relationship to time, which is independent of those objects.

    4) We should use the signs of the stars to see whats coming

The entire subject matter of your proposition suddenly changed here. Up to now, it was about keeping track of time and Bible persons noticing the celestial “procession”; suddenly, you are proposing that Christians take astrology seriously. This is not permitted either Jewish people or Christians.

    5) I believe the pagans learned astrology from fallen angels

Which pagans? I mean: astrology differs *widely* (e.g. Chinese vs. Mediterranean; Babylonian vs. Greco-Roman). Whose astrology is from “fallen angels” (known as “demons” in Christianity), and whose is from – well, some other source?

    6) I also believe the good angels have the same knowledge and more but this knowledge was left out of the Bible from the pope at the time who obviously was in charge of the King James Authority.

Wow. There are so many things wrong with this sentence.

    a) this knowledge was left out of the Bible
That knowledge was never included in any known Bible.

    b) from the pope at the time
From what Pope at what time?

    c) who obviously was in charge of the King James Authority
Yikes! The King James Version was translated in **defiance** of the Pope! Nevertheless, dozens of other Bibles existed before the time of the King James Version (including at least 7 in English) – some produced by command of the Pope and many (like the King James Version) not!

    Astronomy? Yes.
    Astrology? No.

    Catholic Church teaches:

All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future.

Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers.

They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

with astronomy, which is a science
but not with astrology , which is considered a superstition and a draw to predeterminism by Christians

Until the 18th cent the science of astronomy was tied up with astrology( which is based on Sumerian religious cosmology and gods) and most of the improtant astronomers of the time made their living by astological chart making and predictions

The magi were astrologers and used that probably to figure out what the “Star” meant concerning the Christ

I believe the pagans learned astrology from observation.

    The Archer

    Modality: Mutable
    Element: Fire
    Ruler: Jupiter
    Season: Fall
    9th Sign of Zodiac

    Metal: Tin
    Stone: Topaz
    Color: Turquoise
    Anatomy: Hips, Thighs, Muscles

Keywords: optimistic, restless, enthusiastic, adventurous, honest, irresponsible, outspoken, independent

Comparison with its symbol, the Archer: Sagittarius is symbolized by the Archer–half-man, half-horse. This symbolizes the Sagittarian’s attempt to free itself from man’s animal nature. The centaur is thought to symbolize the development of the human soul. It symbolizes the animal natures and desires of man, as well as its spiritual aspirations. In Greek mythology, centaurs were adventurous, brave, and wise; they were also given to brawling and uncivilized behavior.

The glyph for Sagittarius is a straightforward one — it depicts the archer’s arrow slung in a bow. This glyph symbolizes the desire for direction, a higher purpose, and abundance.

    Sun in Sagittarius

(The Sun is in Sagittarius from November 23 to December 21, depending on the year).
Restless, cheerful, and friendly, Sun in Sagittarius people are generally on the go. They have a love of freedom, and a disdain for routine. Generally quite easygoing, Sagittarians make friends with people from all walks of life. They love to laugh and tease, and get along well with both sexes.

Sagittarians have an often blind faith in people, and in the world. Their optimism is infectious, although it can get them into trouble from time to time. These are curious people who love to learn. Their idealistic nature is hard to miss.

Although generally easygoing, Sagittarius is a fire sign. This gives natives a generally quick temper. Fortunately, they’re usually as quick to forget what got them angry in the first place.

The need for escape is generally strong, and some Solar Sagittarians come across as a little irresponsible. They’re generally easy to forgive, however. After all, their direct, honest approach in life is admirable.

The Sagittarius is really a centaur — the lower half is horse, the upper half is a man. The man is holding a bow with an arrow aimed upwards toward the sky. This symbolizes the Sagittarius’ drive to overcome basic animal instincts by aiming his thoughts into the divine realms of the heavens. In other words, Sagittarius is hunting for ideas and experiences that draw you into greater awareness. As such, Sagittarius tend to love adventure, travel and philosophy — all ways of extending beyond your immediate surroundings.

Sagittarius tend to aim their arrows of thought upward, being the incurable optimists of the zodiac. Sagittarius often look at the sunny side of life and the silver lining to any dark cloud. Sagittarius are honest to a fault, for you can say what’s on your mind before you realize that someone’s feelings might be hurt. Since the Sagittarius is part horse, there is also a connection between Sagittarius and horses, be it a love of riding or an emphasis on the most powerful part of a horse: its legs and thighs. In fact, many of Sagittarius love outdoor hiking and long distance running.

The Sagittarius motto is “It is better to know how to learn than to know.” You seek knowledge and wisdom, never tiring of the quest for what is yet to come. Others enjoy being with you when you are in your outgoing and joyful mood, but you can become more sullen if you feel that your wings have been clipped. Even in a restrictive situation, however, you’ll not lose hope–and
